HomeKit Secure Video and Matter doorbells: what they change for privacy
Facts last verified · Every claim is linked to its source · Methodology
Short answer: Apple's HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) adds end-to-end encryption to cameras that support it. Your Apple home hub analyzes motion clips at home and stores only the ones that matter, end-to-end encrypted, in iCloud. 12 It is still cloud storage behind a paid plan, and few doorbells support it.
What HomeKit Secure Video does
- When motion is detected, the camera sends clips to an Apple device acting as a home hub over an encrypted local network connection, "without exposing that video content to Apple or any third party". 2
- The home hub analyzes video "using on-device intelligence" to decide what to record to iCloud; recordings are end-to-end encrypted and you can view the last 10 days. 1
- It needs an iCloud+ plan: 50 GB covers one camera, 200 GB up to five, and 2 TB or more unlimited cameras. HSV video does not count toward your iCloud storage. 1
- In our rubric, HSV earns the "optional" end-to-end encryption points. It does not count as local storage, because recordings live in iCloud. See the methodology.
Doorbells and cameras we track with Apple Home support
| Device | Score | E2EE | Local storage | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4Doorbell · Battery or wired | 43 | Optional | Yes | Not needed |
| Aqara Camera Hub G3Camera · Plug-in (USB-C), Wi-Fi | 43 | Optional | Yes | Not needed |
| ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (wired)Doorbell · Wired, Wi-Fi | 5 | Unverified | None | Required |
- Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 (43): supports HomeKit Secure Video, so end-to-end encryption is available if you use it. 3
- Aqara Camera Hub G3 (43): indoor camera with HSV support. 4
- ecobee Smart Doorbell Camera (wired) (5): pairs with Apple Home, but ecobee says "Apple Home Secure Video is not supported" on this doorbell. 5
- ecobee's indoor SmartCamera with voice control (not yet in our database) does support HSV; ecobee says its video and iCloud recordings are end-to-end encrypted. 6
Matter doorbells: where things stand
The Connectivity Standards Alliance released Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025, adding cameras. Matter cameras stream live video and audio over WebRTC, with local and remote access, and the spec allows continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud destinations. 7 The Verge reports the spec covers "all types of video cameras", including video doorbells, and that existing cameras could gain support through an over-the-air update. 8
The catch for privacy: Matter does not cover storing footage. It hands that off to whatever local or cloud storage the maker offers, so a camera could support Matter and still require a cloud subscription to review recordings. 8 As of October 22, 2026, none of the devices in our database documents Matter camera support.
